Motorcycles are gaining popularity today with more people beginning to ride than ever before. People are riding many different versions of the standard Harley motorcycle. This includes the three wheeled motorcycle, motorcycles with side cars (for dogs and human passengers), modified bikes and padded bikes – all for the motorcycle enthusiast’s pleasure. Bikers enjoy being in the open country air, love getting to know other bikers and long for the sense of adventure that can only be felt on a motorcycle. But these modes of transportation hold a false sense of security and false perception of safety when operating on busy highways and freeways. When a motorcycle has an accident with a car or a truck, it is clear to see who the real winner will be. Pound per pound, the motorcycle will have a difficult time protecting even the most seasoned motorcycle rider from injury after a loss with an auto or truck. Most states require helmets, though some still have no requirement to wear a helmet when operating a motorcycle. When cyclists are wearing helmets, the percent of serious head, neck or spinal injuries are so small they are a tenth of a percent or less nationwide as a result.

Insurance insures the motorcycle rider in the event of an accident or loss. This is significant because over 75% of motorcycle accidents happen with cars or trucks when the cars don’t see the motorcycle in a lane or when turning into side roads. If a motorcycle is involved in a single accident, it is still usually caused by a sliding effect of the motorcyclist braking too hard to avoid a car and falling off the motorcycle as a result. When motorists make left turns, the motorcyclist who is driving straight ahead is at a great risk for being hit in this type of accident. The weather being a factor in a motorcycle accident is at a small percentage, under 5% overall, even when the elements are not under our control. But alcohol is under our control, and over half of the fatal motorcycle accidents are because of a result of the driver drinking or another driver hitting the motorcyclist as a result of having had too much to drink.

As a matter of fact, fatalities as a result of motorcycle accidents were on a continual rise until the year 2009, when they declined for the first time dropping to 4,462 in 2009 from 5,312 noted in 2008. The figures compare with over 30,000 fatal accidents of which over 24,000 were with passenger vehicles. Statistically speaking, there are almost 4 passenger cars and trucks for every one motorcycle currently on the nation’s highways. It is necessary for motorcycle drivers to understand the risks and work to keep themselves safe on the roads at all times.

What can a motorcycle enthusiast do to keep safe? The most important idea is to understand your motorcycle and know now it operates. It is necessary to take a course in riding a motorcycle safely and understand how to lean into curves, how to mount the motorcycle, know what equipment to wear while riding, understand how to repair the motorcycle if it breaks down on the road (especially in isolated areas) and how to be a responsible driver on the roads. New motorcycle drivers should begin riding on open rural roads, then lesser used highways, then work up to become experienced enough to take the road trip they have been dreaming of their whole lives. It is foolish and foolhardy to buy a motorcycle and then proceed out on a complex road trip without having the experience to stay safe, make necessary repairs and understand what it means to be safe on the road. For example, if you have never been caught in the rain with a tee shirt while riding on the back of a motorcycle, you have no idea that the rain feels like needles and there is lots of debris and mud kicked up by the motorcycle. If the rider is wearing appropriate leather to protect the person from the weather and an accident, the ride becomes enjoyable, safe and a pleasant trip no matter what the weather! If a rider is wearing riding gloves, boots fully cover ankles and feet and has on chaps or leather pants, a leather jacket, rain gear and reflective outer garments if necessary and a properly fitting helmet, because the sky is the limit to the fun that can be had on the motorcycle while out on the open road.

Motorcycle drivers are expected to and must obey all the rules of the road that apply to car drivers. This is a fact not an option. Motorcycle drivers need to understand that they can be injured or cause injury to others by lane splitting, driving at excessive speeds over the stated speed limits, or driving under the influence of controlled substances or alcohol. If the driver of a motorcycle takes drugs, he or she can endanger himself/herself and any other driver or pedestrian on the road.

Motorcyclists should also minimize distractions while on the road. They need to turn down the radio while driving and limit to exclude use of cell phones on the road. They need to be fully engaged in driving the motorcycle to appreciate and see hazards located in the road in time to avoid them and prevent an accident.

Riding a motorcycle is a bit more complicated than just hopping on one and turning on the ignition. If the rider is aware of hazards, understands the responsibility of driving a motorcycle, knows how to stay safe and protect the safety of others – riding can be a memorable and extremely freeing and pleasant experience. This is definitely one to add to the bucket list, and when done right, it can be an amazing memory builder for anyone interested in the adventures of the open road.

Insurance is all about risk. An insurance company bets that the interest they earn from premiums paid over the course of a policy will be greater than the benefit they may have to pay out to the policy holder. So insurance companies obviously want to minimize their risk as much as possible.

This is especially true when it comes to life insurance policies.

When you buy a life insurance policy, your insurance company wants you to stay alive as long as possible because:

A customer who is alive continues to make payments

A customer who is alive does not receive a death benefit

To minimize their risk, and to set the premiums of your policy, the company will require new customers to take a medical exam. Based on the results, the insurance company will make the decision as to whether or not to sell you a policy and how much to charge.

What goes on in the medical exam

Usually, the insurance company will have you provide a medical history through a form. Some people believe that they can fudge a bit on this portion of the exam but rest assured, the insurance company will completely vet your history through the Medical Information Bureau.

The next part of the medical exam will be the actual medical exam performed by a paramedic, although some insurance companies may order an attending physician’s statement to be completed by a doctor of their choosing.

The exam performed by the paramedic, or nurse, is usually done in the home and will usually consist of:

A medical history

Having your physical measurements taken

Having your blood pressure taken

The collection of a urine sample

The collection of blood samples

Of course, the more insurance you are looking to buy means the more in depth the test will be. If you are under 40 and are buying a relatively small insurance policy, you may not even be required to take a medical exam, however whenever you are buying life insurance you should be ready.

If you are thinking about buying a renter’s insurance policy then you are taking a great first step. Most people who rent either don’t know about renter’s insurance or don’t think they need it. But when someone decides that a renter’s insurance policy is something that they may need, there are usually a host of different questions that they have, and it is best to know the answers to these questions before you buy a policy.

What type of losses are covered?

While most policies cover the basics like; fire, smoke, theft, vandalism, falling objects, and damage from faulty plumbing or appliances not all policies are created equally when it comes to what you are protected against. Generally losses due earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes are not covered by renter’s insurance. Make sure you are comfortable with the coverage you are given before you make a purchase.

What is the deductible?

If you are trying to keep premiums low one way to manage this is to settle for a higher deductible, but keep in mind that you shouldn’t purchase a policy with a deductible that you can’t afford to meet. Determine how much of your own money you can afford to pay in the event you file a claim and work from there.

Are living expenses covered if the dwelling is uninhabitable?

If the house or apartment you live in needs to be repaired or replaced due to a covered disaster many policies will provide money for living expenses for a period of time.

What are the personal liability limits?

If someone is injured while at your house, apartment, or condo you can still be held liable even if you don’t own the property. Your renter’s insurance policy should provide enough coverage for you in the event you are sued.

What are the limits on personal property?

Certain types of personal property may have special limits under a renter’s policy. Generally items like home business equipment, collectibles (stamps, trading cards, comics, coins), jewelry, silverware, wall hangings, etc. fall under this category.

What optional coverage can I purchase?

While losses from some events are not covered under your renter’s insurance policy many companies allow you to purchase supplemental insurance to protect yourself if you live in an area prone to these types of disasters. Likewise, you may also have the option to purchase additional liability or umbrella policies.

How am I paid for a claim?

Most people are unaware of the fact that there are two types of ways a renter’s insurance policy will pay out when you file a claim. One is the actual cash value (ACV) where you are paid for the original price of the items in the claim. Premiums for these policies cost less because they don’t pay out as much as the other type, a replacement cost policy. A replacement cost policy will pay you based on what it will cost to go out and replace the items in your claim.

Having the right information and knowing what to ask can make the whole process of finding, and buying, a renter’s insurance policy all that much easier on you. Make sure you contact a few different companies and see how their answers differ so you have a basis for comparison that you can use to select the policy that best fits your needs.

Just like a homeowner protects his or her property with their homeowner’s insurance policy, someone who rents can safeguard their belongings with a renter’s insurance policy. Renter’s insurance policies also protect the tenant when there is accidental damage done to the building they are renting as well. Damage caused by a fire, vandalism, smoke, etc. will all be covered so that the landlord does not have to take money from a security deposit or sue their tenant for damages.

One misconception that renter’s sometimes have about this type of policy comes from damage caused by a pet. Things get a bit murky for the policy holder because many insurance policies will cover injury caused by the insured’s pet. However if your cat scratches up the new carpet or your dog chews a hole in the wall, the cost to replace or repair these damages is coming out of the renter’s pocket.

Why? Because your insurance company views damage caused by a pet as something that could have been prevented. Most likely, your renter’s insurance policy HO4 form has an exclusion in it for damage done to the premises you are renting, except by smoke, fire, or explosion. Even if you look to the section on personal liability to help you will likely notice that Personal Liability does not apply to property damage to property, as is also common language in most policies.

So what can I do as a pet owner?

Unfortunately, most renter’s insurance policies don’t offer riders to cover damage done by pets either. Pet owners can look into renter’s pet insurance coverage if they are worried that their animals may cause damage to their rented property and can’t pay out of pocket. These policies are usually rather inexpensive and some even offer medical coverage for your pets.

Combining this type of insurance with a trustworthy renter’s insurance policy will go a long way when it comes to protecting you as a tenant.

It’s weird to live with someone you don’t know. It’s even weirder when you don’t trust them and you have some pretty personal and valuable belongings in your possession. Here are five ways to secure your dorm room.

Buy a safe

Many things can be saved this way! Go to Walmart, Target, or even Office Depot and invest in one. It doesn’t have to be a $200 heavy duty safe. You can be a nice $20-$40 safe that is drill proof. Drill proof keeps the intruder from drilling a hole into the key hole and wiping your stuff and if they do try it will be unsuccessful. If you do get a safe make sure that you keep archive of what is there so that you don’t forget that you took it out or that someone took your item.

Keep your mailbox empty

You can keep anything that you don’t want your roommate to see in your mailbox. If you don’t get mail the mail man will never touch your box making it a safe haven for anything you need to store overnight.

Get a trunk

Some students have very nice purses or students may have electronic devices that are valuable and obviously can’t fit in a small safe. By buying a trunk you are able to store these larger items and keep them secure by buying and anti-theft lock. Also make sure that you have a sturdy trunk so it’s not easy to just break into. As long as you have a sturdy looking safe no one will want to mess with it.

Take pictures of your stuff

Take pictures then give a copy to your mom and dad or maybe friends and have them put those pictures away. If something is lost you have proof that it once was there and in good condition.

Buy a laptop lock

Every year thousands of laptops are stolen from students. These are cheap compared to how much it costs to replace your computer and you can buy one from any electronics or computer shop. Ask the rep to show you show to install one properly so that when you get to your dorm your laptop is safe.

Don’t let just anyone in your room

Make agreements with your roommate on people who can come in. You don’t want random strangers coming into your dorm room looking at your stuff and making plans in their heads to come and swipe your stuff later. When you are about to leave hide anything that is out that you don’t want stolen. It’s more likely for someone to steal stuff that is already out than to rummage through stuff to get it.

Lock your door

It’s not an uncommon thing at all to leave dorm rooms unlocked and this is how things get swiped every day. Make sure to always lock your door whether you going down the hall or class. Lock your door. Many criminals know that most students leave their doors unlocked that’s why Universities are the hot spot for small theft.

No matter what your course in life, you will more than likely have to have some type of insurance, whether that be health, auto, life, or home insurance. But with any type of insurance, you will have to be reading and signing some type of contract – and it’s inevitable that you will have to read and sign stacks of paperwork where you don’t even understand half of what is written. It is very important that you make sure you read over your policies carefully and understand them and what is actually covered. Here are some of the most common terms you should be aware of regarding insurance:

Premium – This is the amount that is to be paid by the policyholder (you) for coverage under the contract. Regarding health insurance, this could be the amount that your employer, or sponsor, will pay to cover you under their plan. Most policies are paid in periodic installments (monthly, quarterly, yearly).

Deductible – This would be the amount that you must first pay before the insurance company will take care of the rest. Deductibles are normally a smaller fee if your premiums are more expensive, whereas your deductibles are normally larger if your premiums are cheaper. For example, someone who has a good driving record and hasn’t been in any accidents may opt to choose a policy requiring a larger deductible and smaller premium because their odds of getting into an accident are much lower. But be aware that if you do get into an accident and need your car fixed, that you will need to first come up with the deductible (which can be quite high) before your insurance company will pay on your policy.

Co-payment – An amount that you have to pay at the time of service before your insurance will pay the remainder (such as a doctor’s or hospital visit). Copayments are paid each time you use one of these services and are usually nominal (compared to paying everything out of pocket!).

Co-insurance – Insurance underwritten jointly with another or others is considered co-insurance. In regards to health insurance, this service is especially used by seniors that are on Medicare or those who are on fixed incomes so that they aren’t stuck with large, unexpected expenses. One main insurance plan covers most of the bill while a smaller plan (from another company) covers the remainder.

Coverage Limits – There are some policies that will only pay for a specific amount of different types of services. For example, your family dental insurance may only pay for 2 cleanings a year. So if you and your spouse and 3 children need cleanings, the policy would actually only cover 2 out of those 5 cleanings, and you would be stuck with paying the other 3 cleanings out of pocket. Coverage limits can catch many people off-guard, so be sure to make sure that the limits encompass everything that you expect.

In-Network – This term is used to cover doctors and other medical professionals that accept your specific health insurance. When researching health insurance, make sure that you browse through the booklet of in-network professionals to make sure that you are happy with the selection of doctors/hospitals. You may be surprised that many doctors are choosey about what insurances they accept and that your favorite doctor may not accept coverage from your new policy.

Who doesn’t use the internet these days? People of all ages and nationalities have embraced the World Wide Web, mostly due to the ability to find information and keep in touch with not only family and friends, but the entire world. It has become a place of eclectic information, so where do you start when you are trying to find important information such as trying to get the best insurance rates for yourself? The internet is a great way to find the coverage that you want, at a price that you can afford, and in a relatively short amount of time – but where do you start?

Here is a list of ways to help you find the best insurance rates:

First stick with names you recognize. When you type in the word “insurance” into any search browser, you may feel as if you have opened up Pandora’s Box. You will receive thousands of links to all types of different websites claiming to get you the best bang for your buck. But if you are just starting off, try sticking with the names that you recognize, mainly the larger corporations. This will give you a starting ground, and it will also give you an idea of what your rates will be, and then you will be able to use those quotes as a comparison guide. Also, the larger corporations obviously have more money to spend on advertising, so their names will naturally come up first in any search engine.

Good websites are laid out well and have the useful information that you need to get what you want, easily. These companies will also provide answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) as well as explanations of insurance jargon. Don’t waste your precious time reading over a website that doesn’t explain everything in laymen’s terms for you and also one where you have to spend your precious time searching around for what you are looking for.

Make sure you enter in your information correctly. By having all of your personal information handy and then also typing in everything correctly will make sure that you get a more accurate quote. Insurance is oftentimes determined based on geographical location or specific information about a vehicle like the color or number of doors, so not entering in your information correctly may result in an inaccurate quote. Also, providing details to-the-point will give you more realistic results. This means if you don’t mention that ticket you got last month while speeding, or being treated for a previous illness, or any detail that might potentially affect your premium, may result in a different quote than what you actually receive. Any insurance agent will be performing a thorough background check and will be able to find out any type of specific information about you such as driving records or medical treatments, so by not providing them online while searching for a quote doesn’t benefit you.

Research the company! Find a respected, well established company to do business with. You wouldn’t want to send your premiums to a company that will go out of business in a few months. There are many websites that provide reviews of companies, so even before researching for quotes, you may want to research the companies you chose to request quotes from.

Renters’ insurance rates may usually vary from one state to another and from one insurance provider to another. However, some insurers provide cheaper rates in certain cities that are relatively safer than most other cities from various perspectives.

Here is a list of 10 cities in the United States where low crime rates may help reduce the cost of renters’ insurance:

Scottsdale, AZ.

Renters’ insurance rates in Scottsdale are one of the lowest anywhere in America. Insurance providers consider Scottsdale among the safest cities with a relatively lower number of insurance claims coming from renters. The crime rate in Scottsdale is 61 percent less than the state average and nearly 50 percent less than the national average.

Virginia Beach, VA.

Virginia Beach is popular not only for its warm weather and wonderful beaches, but it also has a low rate of crime. Residents of the city not only enjoy the sun, but also feel safer than people in the rest of the state. Renters receive the benefit of lower renters’ insurance premiums.

Plano, TX.

Plano ranks among the best and safest cities to live in America. Therefore, it is not surprising that even in terms of renters’ insurance it turns out to be one of the cheapest cities in the country. The general cost of living in Plano is also among the lowest in the country.

Fremont, CA.

Fremont benefits from a relatively low crime index compared to most other cities in America of its size. Renters’ insurance premiums are quite low, considering the fact that California is not among the cheapest states for most types of coverage.

San Jose, CA.

San Jose has a high median household income, excellent educational system, and a low crime rate. San Jose’s property crime index is lower than the rest of California by 19 percent. Thefts and burglary cases are almost 50 percent lower than the national average. No wonder it has one of the lowest renters’ insurance rates in the country.

Honolulu, HI.

Despite the large influx of tourists into Honolulu, its number of violent crimes is 18 percent lower than the national average. Renters’ insurance premiums are slightly lower compared to most American cities.

Anaheim, CA.

The property crime index in Anaheim is 20 percent lower than the national average. Renters in the city are rewarded with cheaper renters’ insurance rates.

Santa Ana, CA.

Despite a poor educational system in Santa Ana, the city’s property crime rate is 34 percent lower than the national average. Renters’ insurance here ranks among the cheapest in the country.

Fort Wayne, IN.

The cost of living in Fort Wayne is nearly 10 percent lower than the national average. It is also among the cheapest cities when it comes to renters’ insurance premium rates.

Garland, TX.

Low crime rates and a cost of living that is 10 percent lower than the national average make Garland a good place to live. Renters’ insurance rates in Garland are among the lowest in the country.

Despite economic troubles, violent crime is down for the fifth year in a row according to statistics released by the FBI.

Crime costs society a great deal, especially when it comes to insurance costs. Auto insurance agencies will set rates based on where you live granting lower premium costs to those who reside in an area where car theft is lower than others. The same is true when it comes to homeowner’s insurance. Living in an area with a low crime rate helps reduce premiums.

So taking this into consideration, is it any surprise that the city you live in will be an important variable when it comes to renter’s insurance premiums?

So where are the safest places to live in America? According to statistics from the FBI, living in the following cities can help reduce your renter’s insurance costs and provide you with a nice, safe place to live:

10. Orange, California

The city of Orange had only 109 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 136,416 residents.

9. Bellevue, Washington

This city of 122,363 people boasted 108 violent crimes per 100,000 people and no murders.

8. Simi Valley, California

While growing from 111,351 in the 2000 census to a population of 124,237, the city of Simi Valley had 106 violent crimes, and only 30 robberies, per 100,000 people.

7. Frisco, Texas

Only 105 violent crimes per 100,000 people for this growing town of 116,989 residents and zero murders.

6. Round Rock, Texas

Another city with zero murders and 104 violent crimes per 100,000 residents this small city of 105,412 is also ranked as one of the best small cities to live in.

5. Gilbert, Arizona

With 95 violent crimes per 100,000 and only 28 of them robberies this little metropolis of 208,453 remains safe despite growing from just over 5,000 residents in 1980.

4. Murrieta, California

One murder and 95 violent crimes per 100,000 people makes this city of 103,466 a pretty safe place to live.

3. Cary, North Carolina

Down to only 85 violent crimes per 100,000 people Cary’s population of 135,234 remains pretty safe.

2. Temecula, California

Temecula has 100,097 people living there and only 72 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

1. Irvine, California

With 219,156 people, Irvine had only 55 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.
