Christmas is on the horizon, and there’ll be many people hitting the shops to finish off that last bit of shopping ready for the big day. Yet, we mustn’t neglect making sure that we have all the essentials we need at home either!

Whatever time of winter it may be, households would do well to make sure that their home is going to be sufficiently warm this year. No matter what the coal fire or heating oil prices may be, it’s essential to keep warm. That’s because unfortunately, Christmas is a time when many people can succumb to the cold and get extremely poorly, so there’s really no excuse for letting the house get cold this year.

Keeping your house nice and toasty also near-guarantees that festive indoor loveliness that only Christmas spirit can bring – especially when it’s chucking down with rain (or hopefully snow) outside!

You’ll also need a decent supply of fuel to do the cooking on as well. If you’re fortunate enough to have got a turkey big enough for the whole family, you’ll have to keep the oven on for a slow roast to make sure the bird is fully cooked ready for the feast. A little tip to know when it is ready is to make sure the lovely juices run clear.

For those baking sweet-treats in the oven – mince pies, Christmas pudding and the like – you could even get away with making them the night before. Then you can simply warm them back up the next day. There’s no harm in a little cheating, especially at Christmas time!

Assuming your decorations are up, you’ve actually got very little to do after that. Just make sure that the family and friends are well-briefed on the day’s activities and definitely get a copy of the Radio Times in your hands, ready for all the memorable Christmas greats.

Merry Christmas!

Over the years, natural disasters have devastated communities, displaced families and destroyed billions of dollars worth of property.

Natural disasters can occur at any time, and most do so with little warning. Below are some of the worst natural disasters the US has ever seen.

Hurricane Galveston (Sept. 8, 1900)

Galveston was known in the 19th century as the “Jewel of Texas” until one of the deadliest natural disasters wiped this town clean of that title. The island was known for its cotton trade and it was Texas’ largest city. You’d think that officials would try and project this jewel that they depended on so much. However, they decided that it was unnecessary to build a seawall to protect the city. This decision blew up in their face when a category 4 hurricane with 135mph winds made landfall one morning. With it came 15-foot-high waves. By the late afternoon the entire island was submerged in water. About 8,000 people died and although the city was successfully rebuilt it was no longer the “Jewel of Texas” nor did it have it reputation as the “New York of the South.”

Hurricane Katrina (Aug. 29, 2005)

The hurricane here started as a category 1 as it swept across South Florida and became the US’s costliest tragedy. Katrina hit the Louisiana coast with 125mph winds and storms like never before. She broke through levees that shielded New Orleans from high waters and left 80% of the city literally underwater. Katrina killed at least 1,836 people and left us with a bill of $125 billion.

Dust Bowl (early 1930’s)

Prior to the 1930’s the Great Plains was a farmer’s paradise. The growing demand for wheat made every farmer starting plowing away much of the southern plains’ soil to hit it big. Due to the high rate of farming the land was exposed to erosion. Since the grassy land was no longer there to hold the moisture in the soil everything dried up. A decade-long drought transformed what used to be fertile topsoil into dust. The windstorms then picked up the dust and blew it eastward, darkening the skies as far as the Atlantic Coast. The storm decimated crops and ruined homes. Farmers turned to the government for aid and half a million Americans were left homeless.

Great San Francisco Fire and Earthquake (April 18, 1906)

On the morning of April 18, 1906 San Francisco residents were awakened by an earthquake. But this was no ordinary earthquake, this quake set a fire that caused the city to burn for 4 straight days. The earthquake was a 7.7-7.9 magnitude tremor that had broken natural gas mains that not only sparked the fires, but also damaged the water mains leaving the fire department with little to no resources to battle the fires. By the time the fires were extinguished it had devoured more than 500 city blocks and more than 3,000 lives were lost. The 225,000 people that did survive were now homeless.

Heat wave of 1980 (summer of 1980)

The heat wave of 1980 was one of the most catastrophic weather events in history. A high pressure ridge pushed temperatures across Central and Southern United States to rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit that summer. Crops were destroyed and so were families. This heat wave cost an estimated $48 billion due to the massive drought across the US and 10,000 people died from heat-stress related ailments.

While nothing can make living through a natural disaster easier, there is something you can do to pick up the pieces. Making sure your property and belongings are properly insured will help you and your family move forward after such a devastating loss.

The “golden age” of babies, for parents to sharpen their skills on baby language, is from age one to three years. Even though the babies are not able to speak, they can still communicate with their parents by their actions and voices. That is why it is very important to stimulate and educate the baby’s language skill continuously. There are different ways on enriching and stimulating a baby’s language skills, and these are discussed below:

1. Use books with pictures that have short sentences – Most babies, at a very early age, are attracted to pictures compared to words and sentences. That is why if you are a parent who wants to give something to your baby, a colorful picture book will be very much appreciated by your baby. You can also tell your baby stories based from the colored pictures in the book.

2. Read your baby colorful books with lots of pictures. – Babies are visually good and so you must take this advantage side in order to improve their language skills. They are easily hooked on images and pictures. They can easily remember images’ names. When reading, you can ask your baby “what is this” questions, and try to associate sounds that can capture your baby’s attention. Many parents prefer to use this method in developing language skills of their little ones

3. To motivate and educate your baby’s language and hearing skills, a parent should use intonations when reading books. – You can entertain your baby and at the same time teach him/her different sounds. It will make the baby to easily recollect the words, phrases and sentences. In this activity, the baby’s hearing skill is stimulated. Put emphasis to whatever important thing you are reading and put some facial expressions because babies would read your emotions through your face.

4. Try to expand the words and gestures to make an idea. – Associating similar things will also be helpful to babies. Such as when the baby is making hand gestures to the water, a parent can say “It is a fish”, since the fish lives in the water.

5. When reading a book, allow your baby to turn the pages. – In this activity, you are able to teach your baby on turning and tossing the pages, at the same time improving the baby’s motor skills. It is also good to let your baby more involved on every activity you do.

6. When playing, it is good to make hand and body gestures. – Babies love games. It is much more fun to play games using body actions, at the same time able to learn so many things from it.

7. Talk with your babies. – This activity helps your baby improve on how to communicate to other people. A baby enjoys different tones of voices when someone asks him/her. Such activity will give the baby any idea on the concept and on how to communicate to others. This activity will also help on introducing the baby on new words enriching his/her vocabulary.

8. Allowing babies to have options. – This activity enables babies to express any ideas and emotions, and at the same time enriching the baby’s vocabularies. For example, asking your baby which fruit he/she likes. You can also show those different fruits and let him/her choose according to what he/she likes.

9. Calmly correct your baby’s wrong doings. – Correcting your baby’s wrong words and actions is very important because the baby might continue doing such acts while growing. It is very important at a very young age for a baby to be corrected. Long patience is needed for this activity.

10. Showing your baby new places. – This activity will help your baby see new things and at the same time meet new more people. You can also associate new words and sounds to the new things your baby see.

Learning is a process. It is very important to expose your baby to things that can help improve his/her skills. A language skill is not easy to attain. But with continuous learning, proper guidance and support, your baby will properly develop it. A parent should have long patience and must try to avoid shouting on the baby, since it will not do any good.

There are many similarities to teaching an online course to the recent social phenomenon of speed dating. As the instructor, you’re courting a number of individuals for potential, using finite blocks of time to share information and assess value. How you negotiate the various elements of online training, including the critical issue of establishing a positive interaction with your class, will determine if both you and your students mesh.

Not a substitute

Teaching an online course does not mean that your role is little more than that of a substitute who rides along until the “regular” teacher returns. Just as good teachers don’t simply pull out last year’s assignments and handouts for this year’s new class, online faculty need to be familiar with the course objectives and the material to be covered by the class. The course needs to be yours and the material needs to be appropriate for the particular class being taught.

Trust is a must

Not to make light of the necessity that students feel secure in participating in an online community, they do, but there’s more to building confidence between you and your students. By being actively engaged in a well-organized, thoughtful class with meaningful activities, your students will understand that you’ve invested time into providing a worthwhile class for them.

Be dependable

Returning to the speed-dating analogy, you don’t want any big surprises during your time together. Be on time for scheduled events, and don’t become a surprise guest during exchanges due to a regular lack of presence during the course. If your class activity is synchronous, conducted with all parties at once, you need to be known to participants as being there even if your expectations are for student interaction. For asynchronous instruction, students need to know that if they ask for help, they will have a reply within the mutually understood timeframe established as a class.

Quality is not optional

It’s not easy to throw up an online course. It takes time, forethought and vigilance to create a good, rigorous, distance learning experience. From the software, to the I.T. support, to the choice of group and interactive activities you select, each aspect should be well supported and require genuine learning by the student. The objectives, like any good instruction, need to be clearly defined with all activities unmistakably related to those goals.

Online learning that is laborious only in its busywork is a waste of time. Period. Involve your students with challenging material, innovatively presented activities that produce the sufficient levels of cognitive dissonance needed for true learning, and you’ll have achieved the potential internet-based learning offers.

That magic moment

Instructors have a real chance to take a solid, traditional course and break down barriers presented by the limitations inherent to classroom instruction. Like a great first date, taking the ordinary, however adequate, and making it memorable is what e-learning can mean for both you, the instructor, and every student you’re charged with serving. Nothing has to be fancy, but you’ve got to provide that wow factor that makes taking an online course a magic moment, just without the wine and candles.

It can be a difficult task to successfully manage all of life’s requirements, especially in the fast-paced society that we currently inhabit. It’s a struggle to manage all the requests of friends and family, but now you’re starting to think about pursuing an education too. This can seem like an impossible feat to begin, let alone, to accomplish. If you are a caring person, it might be easy for you to put your well being last, but in the long run this can take its toll on everyone in your life.
If you don’t find the time to pamper yourself, then it’s very likely you will reach a breaking point. This can affect not only you, but your loved ones too. I hope that the tips I provide help you accomplish all of life’s priorities, while also helping you to welcome a happy and healthy way of life into your world.

Create a Daily Workout Routine
Keeping your body and mind in good health should be of utmost importance to everyone. We are provided with numerous health choices and routes, so it can be very challenging to find the health plan and path that’s right for you. But you can’t just sit around doing nothing because it’s easier to do than choosing a plan. When building your own routine, it is best to just stick to traditional means of exercise, which includes cardio and basic weight training. Getting exercise is important, but so is adopting a healthy diet. These two elements work hand in hand, and you will not reap all the benefits you can if you refuse to exercise and eat properly. It’s crucial to maintain a balance when it comes to healthy choices.

Investigate Alternative Means of Earning an Education
There are many ways to go about furthering your education. Do you have your heart set on attending a traditional school but are discouraged because of the amount of time you will be required to spend away from home? An alternate option is to pursue an online degree. This could quite possibly be the best way to fit your education into your busy and somewhat overwhelming life schedule. Online schools are flexible and provide their students with many options that traditional schools do not.

Learn to Control Yourself by Developing Self-Discipline
Just like getting into a regular routine of exercising can be hard, so can making healthy food choices. If your busy schedule is constantly dictating to you how your days should go, it can be increasingly difficult to take the time and effort necessary to eat the foods your body needs to be healthy. The easiest method for making sure you’re eating well is to try and keep all unhealthy food options out of your home. The saying out of sight, out of mind is very applicable in a situation like this. It’s wise to research a variety of food combinations that can be made with healthy food options like fruits, vegetables and grains. If you have a variety of options then it is easier for you to continue eating well, and it will help you avoid getting bored with your food planning.

Many football lovers are keen to see their offspring enjoying a live match as soon as possible, with many parents choosing to take their children to a football stadium even before they start school.

Football stadiums have become a much safer environment for young people than they were a couple of decades ago. Many of the safety fears which stopped parents bringing their kids to a game have been well dealt with by the Football Association (FA).

This article takes a look at some of the safety measures brought in to allow children to enjoy the game.

Stewards

Every professional football match has a minimum of one steward for every 200 tickets sold. These stewards use crowd control techniques and are fitted with different types of security equipment to ensure the protection of attendees. Games where trouble is expected between rival fans are always subject to additional security measures.

All-Seater stadiums

In 1994, the FA made it compulsory for all professional football clubs to play their matches in all-seater stadiums. The aim of this rule was to increase safety for all supporters including children and vulnerable people. This has also made it easier for children to view the game without their view being blocked.

Family stands

Many professional clubs dedicate a portion of their stadium for children and their parents. These family stands are great for parents who want to bring their child to the football without exposing them to the slurs of hooligans and drunk supporters around them.

Mascots

Nowadays, every professional team has a mascot dressed up in as a cartoon character in a replica kit. The purpose of these is to appeal to child fans and many will be happy to sign autographs or pose for photos with children before the match.

Bringing a child to a live game is a great way to encourage them to take up football as a hobby. Many enjoy being surrounded by passionate supporters and cheering on their team with thousands of other people.

The net was abuzz over Labor Day weekend with news of Amazon’s next big project: the Kindle. Yes, there have already been three iterations of Amazon’s e-reader, but the new Kindle is rumored to be a hybrid e-reader/tablet, and it’s aimed at the heart of Apple’s iPad sales. Of course, the rumors have been around for a while, but a writer for TechCrunch says he was able to take Amazon’s new Kindle for a test drive. A gadget like this could fill a hole in the tablet market: an affordable, easy-to-use machine that’s tailor-made for Amazon’s massive content offerings could be a game-changer.
But a tablet like the new Kindle could also be a new tool in higher education. With Amazon’s e-book offerings, delivering textbooks could be as simple as touching an icon on a screen. And the new Kindle’s web app capabilities, coupled with Amazon’s Cloud Drive, could make sharing, storing and collaborating on assignments quick and easy.
So, assuming we’re actually going to see a new Amazon tablet this holiday season, how will the new Kindle affect teaching and learning? Will schools give it a try for their students? Will students be wooed by its low price? And will it replace the iPad as the must-have gadget on college campuses?
Content is king
It’s true on the Internet, and it’s the case in the classroom: affordable content and other materials are essential to both students and instructors. If the new Kindle can deliver inexpensive educational content, it’s possible they could build a robust audience with schools alone. From K-12 to higher education, providing access to all the content a classroom uses—books, assignments, web content, online education programs—could make the new Kindle a near-indispensable device. And the new Kindle’s portability means that students can study and communicate with instructors and classmates without being tethered to a laptop.
This is not an iPad—and it doesn’t have to be.
Many web commenters are already disappointed by the new Kindle’s seven-inch screen, limited app selection, and lack of cameras. How can it compete with the iPad if it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles the iPad does? But if the specs are correct, the new Kindle isn’t trying to be an iPad—it’s trying to be an Amazon content delivery system. And when you view the specs from that angle, it’s perfect for education: the new Kindle could serve as an interactive textbook, a personal blackboard, an e-mail station, and a quick way to access the Internet. That’s all students need—any more could be distracting.
Price wars
For many consumers who want a tablet but can’t handle the steep prices, the new Kindle’s price of $250 could be the tipping point. There’s also a rumor that Amazon’s Prime program would be included in the price, cutting the final bill and giving consumers access to free two-day shipping and thousands of streaming movies and TV shows. It’ll be tough for even the best Android tablets—like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab—to compete. And if Amazon tailors an app store and e-book store for education, it’ll be a combination that can’t be beat.
All the buzz about the new Amazon Kindle is just speculation—even with a first-hand account of how it will work, there’s been no official word from the company about new hardware. But if there’s any company poised to deal a serious blow to Apple’s iPad share, it’s Amazon: they have the market share, the price range, and the audience to change the landscape of the tablet playing field.

The move toward environmental sustainability has begun to change the habits of a greater number of people than ever before. What used to be the concern of a minority of people on the fringes of mainstream society is rapidly becoming a mainstream issue. As more people become aware that earth’s resources are not infinite, cutting down on inefficiency has become far more important. Individuals can make a huge contribution to a cleaner and less wasteful world just by being aware of the impact of their actions and the purchases they make.

Purchasing local foods and staying away from products that have big amounts of packaging materials associated with them can be a great start. A lot of folks are unaware that just packaging materials alone form a huge amount of unnecessary waste that all ends up in landfills. Big business has also finally begun to realize that going green and cutting down on waste is also beneficial to the financial bottom line. Implementing a greener, more environmentally friendly policy in the office is actually quite easy.

Telecommuting
Encouraging employees to telecommute whenever possible can accomplish more than just energy conservation. Many workers are capable of working from home and still performing all of their duties and responsibilities with just a laptop and a high-speed Internet connection. And working from home doesn’t decrease productivity like employers used to worry about. Workers who telecommute tend to be happy workers and a happy worker generally equals a productive worker. And working from home means that no gasoline is needed for daily commuting.

Employees who do need office resources can often organize their work week in such a way that all of the necessary office functions are consolidated into the first two or three days of the week. The remaining days offer a great opportunity to telecommute. And if employees want to continue their education, take some additional college courses or even pursue an MBA; online education is a great way to continue the telecommuting theme from the office to education. There’s no reason to be trundling off to class when a laptop and an Internet connection can do the job just as easily.

Making the Office Greener
When telecommuting is just not possible, there are still really effective ways to make the office more environmentally friendly. One of the big resource wasting culprits is the office printer. Printing paper copies often is habitual but unnecessary. There will always be a need to print paper copies, but there’s no reason a modern office shouldn’t make the move to electronic copies. Instead of printing paper copies for PowerPoint presentations in company meeting and employee training, think about making electronic copies available through email or a program like SharePoint. Using Google Docs for inter-office collaborations not only cuts down on paper documents, it also works very efficiently. When you absolutely need to print paper copies, make sure you’re using printer paper that contains the highest amount of recycled material you can find.

All the brides- to -be are looking forward the Big Day and hope they will “live happily ever after”, taking for granted that true love lasts forever. However, is there a way to maintain the same level of interest and affection directed towards another person for years and years? Some scientists claim it is possible and the mechanism that is responsible for keeping us involved is tightly connected with the notion of grit, a personality trait that predicts the extent of individual chances in success.
Contrary to a common belief, grit is not just about focus on perseverance or being strong enough to persist in the face of challenges impossible to overcome.

Jonah Lehrer, the author of How We Decide and Proust Was a Neuroscientist has recently delivered a convocation speech at Earlham College in which he clarified the notion to all the students. It seems that the concept of grit has nothing to do with the stubborn persistence even if the goal is truly impossible. If you have no talent for writing, you’ll probably never become a famous novelist. If you are too short, it is very unlikely that you become the NBA star. If you know your limitations, you’ll understand that some goals are not worth pursuing.

To make sure which goals are the useful, long-term ones and which of them are futile, Lehrer advised the students to ask themselves if the goal passes the underwear test. Human mind quickly adapts to improvements and changes, takes things for granted and eventually becomes numb to all the incentives that it gets. Same thing with the underwear: we don’t feel it or are even not conscious of it because we have adapted to the feel of it. And this is all not just about the underwear. Psychological adaptation explains many things, i.e. why you can be excited about the new iPhone and a few weeks after you got it you start complaining about how slow it is. The initial delight vanishes, replaced by dissatisfaction and every pleasure seems to perish.

That is why the only dreams worth pursuing are the ones that pass the underwear test. These long-term goals won’t ever bore you, even if you spend hours practicing. As Lehrer says, they provide lots of subtle thrills that don’t get old and you will never adapt to. Instead, they keep you motivated and interested for years to come. Of course, there are going to be some frustrations along the way, but they won’t be permanent, which allows you to learn and improve. That’s the secret of successful accomplishing something interesting. And also that’s the secret of keeping any romantic relation long-lasting and vivid: find yourself a passion, share it with your partner, break the routine and keep your mind open.
Written by the team of Squaremeal.co.uk.

Moving to a new place can be an exciting time, but it can also be quite stressful. Especially if you wait until the last minute to take care of some essential tasks.

Save yourself the aggravation by planning ahead and taking care of some things in advance. This will give you more time to enjoy your new home and less time spent running around.

Read through the rules/lease agreement or association

If you are renting, make sure you understand what is allowed at your new apartment and what isn’t. Can you bring your bull mastiff or is there a limit on the weight of pets? Are there assigned parking spaces for resident? Can you have a barbeque grill on the patio? These are just some of the things you need to know.

If you are buying a home, make sure that you understand any association or neighborhood rules in advance.

Find a good insurance policy

If you are buying a house or condo, you will need homeowner’s insurance before you sign the mortgage. If you are renting, there is nothing forcing you to buy a renter’s insurance policy. But it is a good idea.

Think your landlord’s insurance will protect your property if it is stolen or damaged? Think again. Your landlord has insurance that protects the building’s structure but your stuff is not protected. The same is true with liability, if the negligence is caused by your landlord then their insurance will cover damages, if you are found to be at fault you will need your own renter’s insurance policy.

Schedule a moving truck

Even if you are taking care of the move yourself, if you need to rent a truck so make sure to reserve it early enough. If you wait until the day before the big move you may find that there are no available trucks for rent. Take care of this at least two weeks in advance or hope that you have a few friends with pick-up trucks that will help you out.

Take care of your mail

Most communication is done through email and social networking nowadays but bills, subscriptions and other “official” things still get sent by the post office. Avoid future headaches by making sure your mail is forwarded to your new address. Take a trip down to any post office and fill out the paperwork or take care of this online.

Of course, you still need to update anyone sending you mail with your new address.

Get your utilities activated

Many apartment complexes will provide certain utilities that are included in the rent. Water and trash are the most common but some also offer basic cable as well. You will need to check to see which utilities are covered and arrange to have service started for those that are not.
