Do You Remember Stove Top Coffee Makers
If you are much younger than 25 I would guess that you have never seen old fashion stove top coffee makers. You probably were brought up on Mr Coffee or something resembling a Mr Coffee.
It isn’t that stovetop coffee makers are so much better at brewing coffee then the instant coffee makers of today, it has more to do with tradition.
At one time if you wanted a fresh cup of coffee at home you actually had to make it. An aluminum or stainless steal pot would have two pieces to it. The bottom piece was a holding tank for the water. The top piece was a stainless steel basket that would hold the coffee grounds. There were no paper filters back then.
There was a stem attached to the bottom of the basket that would reach down into the bottom of the holding tank. That is how the basket was supported above the water.
After the water was in the holding tank you would spoon out the coffee grounds into the basket.
Now it was time to turn on the stove and wait for the water to boil.
Are you finished waiting?
Stove top coffee makers took a little bit of time to accomplish their job. But once the water boiled and the coffee grounds were saturated with hot water the coffee was done.
I have to admit that the whole process of making coffee with stove top coffee makers takes a bit more time than with the new instant drip machines that are available. But the thought of the process does bring back memories.
