Poker Bluffing time arrives when your competition has to be convinced that you have a winning hand when in reality you are holding nothing! There is a real science involved in getting another person to think that your bluff is actually real. Once you bet or raise a bet the other person needs to start thinking that you really do have a better hand. Now that is a successful bluff!

There is a saying in real estate, “Location Is Everything.” Well there is a saying in poker, “Timing Is Everything.” Not only is timing important when bluffing but just as important is the scarcity of bluffing as part of your strategy. If you are caught bluffing too many times people won’t take you seriously. Don’t bluff unless you feel that it will provide a winning strategy.

There Are Bad Times To Bluff

When Others Expect You To Bluff: If you are found to bluff too many times most other players will dismiss you as a serial bluffer. To remedy this situation you are going to have to stop bluffing until you start winning “honestly”. Once your reputation is repaired then you can sparingly bluff with good results.

When There Are Too Many Players: The problem here is that the odds are not with you. When there are a lot players still in the hand then there is more than likely at least one player with a better hand than you. And early in the hand you can be assured they are going to stick with it no matter what you do.

When There Are Inexperienced or Bad Players At The Table: It should be no surprise to you that bad players are all over the place when it comes to poker. As the game has gained popularity there is also a burst of inexperienced players that are showing up. These two types of players are poison to a good poker bluffing strategy. They will call your hand no matter what. They have no regard to what cards you hold, they only want to better their hands. The end result is they will call any and everything.

When You Haven’t Won Any Hands: The competition will have expectations that you are going to take risks that you normally would not take. In the back of their minds they are going to be watching very carefully because they know you are going to try and win some of your money back any way you can.

It is just like we said at the start, good poker bluffing all comes down to timing and strategy. Just like there are times when bluffing is not a good idea, there are other times when bluff poker is the way to go. Let’s take a look at some “times of opportunity”!

When Opportunity Knocks—Bluff

When You Are Up Against Weak Or Tight Players: After you get comfortable with how everybody at the table is playing the game, you should take aim on the weak and the tight because they have a tendency to fold way too soon. Just make sure that you don’t bluff too early. They very well might be holding a good hand of their own or they just will refuse to believe that your hand is any better than theirs is.

When The Number Of Players Has Dwindled: Poker strategy changes when there are fewer players in the pot. It becomes a simpler task to trick a few people rather than a whole table of people. Besides, if you have a decent hand the odds are on your side that others do not.

When Your The Last To Declare After All Have Checked: Normal betting will squeeze some of the players out of the pot. It is not at all uncommon for a player to bluff and bet on the button, so usually you will see people calling because they will refuse to believe that you have a better hand. Strategically it will also let you see where you stand.

When You Missed With Your Preflop Bet: If you got an ace and queen and bet preflop, and the flop does not do you any good with a king-8-5, then your opponents very well might believe you have a strong hand because of your bet preflop. So a good bluff bet on the flop will get people thinking that the flop put you in a good position.

When Your Opponents Fear You: Once you have beaten the guy sitting across the table from you with a good strategy they will become aggravated. You will be in the perfect position to mirror that same play and bluff with freedom. Your bluff will have added bite and people will fold left and right.

You will need to learn all aspects to the game of poker. But if you want to win, gain the respect of your peers, and live to play another day then deception is necessary. The art of poker bluffing is what separates the winners from the losers.
